Initial Requirement
To replace a DOS based system to log freight consignments that leave the warehouse and to produce the freight consignment note that accompanies the freight. This was due to the fact that the existing system that was being used by the client was not Year 2000 compliant and was not dating the consignment notes correctly. In addition, the system was required to calculate the cost of the freight based on the charges incurred from the freight carrier in conjunction with the weight and size of the freight.

Functionality
The system was created to mimic the functionality of the existing DOS based system and was installed as such.
- A main form enabled the user to enter the consignment details including the name of the freight carrier and the destination of the freight. Within this form, a sub-form allowed the user to allocate multiple freight items to each consignment - thus enabling multiple data entry. The user was then able to print a single consignment note to send with the freight carrier, or a multiple of consignment notes should an individual freight carrier be collecting a number of consignments.
- Calculations were included in the system in order for the warehouse manager to see the cost of all the freight by means of a report.
- A reports menu was created allowing the user to filter on specific fields in the database before creating the required report.
- A security file was created in order to only allow authorised users access to the database. At the end of the day, depending on the current user, a process was put in place whereby each branch of the head company was emailed a list of freight to expect at next delivery.
- Over the course of the next 3 years, additional functionality was added to the system. A main feature is the ability to use a bar code scanner to complete the consignment note details. The user uses a bar code scanner to scan the consignment including the origination, destination, freight carrier, consignment type and height, while a scale automatically weighs each consignment. These details are automatically entered into the consignment note and a bar code sticker is produced to attach the specific consignment. Once the sticker has been produced, the scanning form resets itself to wait for the next consignment.
