Hundreds - Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch

Process

The following process was used to upgrade the Access back end database to SQL Server.

  • The current user process was documented; this documentation was used to create a test plan and was available to the organization for future use.

  • A Microsoft SQL server was setup to provide a full test environment for interface with the Microsoft Access front end application.

  • The data was moved to the SQL server and following the test plan created above, the Microsoft Access front end application was put through a rigorous test to identify any issues resulting from the upgrade.

  • Once testing was complete and any necessary design changes made to the Microsoft Access front end application, the production system was updated. This was based on all documentation from the test upgrade and user testing.

Outcome

The Microsoft Access front end application is providing the organization with the same functionality as previously had by the users. There has been no need for re-training and the data is now kept on Microsoft SQL which has providing more flexibility for remote users to connect and view Reports via SQL Reporting Services.
